
2025 Week 3 MCLA Recap: BYU, Air Force Prove Their Top Rankings; Dominant Texas Win
BYU keeps on rolling
The Cougars went down to Tempe last Thursday to take on #6 Arizona State. After being tied at halftime, BYU exploded for a seven goal 3rd quarter and won the game 18-10. Jaco Simpson led the offense with four goals and an assist. He’s just five points away from tying his point total last season. They finished the weekend with a win over Grand Canyon. Despite returning numerous All-American and All-Conference guys on offense, freshman Hutton Murphy is leading the team in goals with 14 along with four assists.
Utah Valley preparing for first test
The Wolverines won another game in blowout fashion after beating Washington State 29-0. They also won a scrimmage against NCAA DII Westminster. UVU travels to Florida on Thursday to take on No. 12 Florida State before heading south to play No. 11 Florida. The Goalie tandem of Second Team All-American Max Sturgill and NCAA DII transfer from Rollins, Patrick Thomas, have been splitting time. It will be interesting to see how they play the two this weekend.
Texas dominates Cal in Austin
Longhorns opened their season with a huge out of conference ranked win at home. Second Team All-American Morry Stein led the offense with five goals and an assist, followed by Tufts transfer Ethan Gatto who had four goals and two assists. Goalie Jack Monahan had 23 saves in his first start.
Northeastern goes 2-0 on the road
The Huskies headed south for the weekend and left with two ranked wins over SELC teams. In the first game against Georgia Tech, Senior Chris Wilk had five goals and an assist along with the game winning goal in overtime. In the next game goalie Sam Bellomy stepped up and had 17 saves and a 71% save percentage in their win over South Carolina.
Cal Poly shocks the West Coast
After starting the first three VCL Polls at 19, the Mustangs shot all the way up to No. 4 after beating Chapman in Orange and then No. 5 San Diego State, also on the road. In the first game Ryan Sanders had nine points, but it was freshman Will Hagman that had the game winner in double overtime. Senior Sean Waterman took over against SDSU scoring three goals and dishing out three assists.
Dawgs continue to dominate
Georgia moves to 4-0 with a win over SELC North opponent South Carolina. Andrew McLaughlin had six goals in the 11-7 win. They travel to Phoenix this weekend to play #10 Arizona State and Grand Canyon.
UC Santa Barbara builds conference standing lead
Gauchos beat Sonoma State and Santa Clara over the weekend to move to 3-0 in the WCLL. After being tied late in the game with Santa Clara, Camden Dwelly scored two quick ones to put the game away and finish with a hat trick.
Florida gets back on track
After a tough loss to Georgia last weekend, the Gators bounced back with a ranked out of conference win over Virginia Tech. Goalie Kyle Iamsuri had 15 saves on 75% save percentage.
Florida State goes into gauntlet with momentum
The Seminoles will host No. 2 Utah Valley this Thursday, then head to Austin this weekend to play #3 Texas, and then have to face #6 Georgia in Athens the following Friday. They head into this stretch with some juice after beating Virginia Tech thanks to Andrew Zeman’s five goals and two assists.
TCU makes first appearance in rankings
The Horned Frogs beat a solid Texas A&M team to start the season and then took down Mizzou this past weekend. They face a hot Iowa State team in Fort Worth this weekend.
Freshman leads Auburn in crazy comeback
After going down 7-0 a couple minutes into the 2nd quarter, Auburn put in freshman goalie Colson Miller. He proceeded to only let up two goals and make 12 saves the rest of the game as the Tiger came back to win 10-9. After dropping four close ones to four good teams, Auburn could start to make some noise the rest of the season.
FGCU shakes up MCLA DII
The Eagles took down No. 8 Coastal Carolina on the road after not being ranked yet this season. NCAA DII grad transfer, Brendon Bostley, from Barton College had five goals and two assists.
Air Force proves they’re No. 1 with win over Montana State
Mark Tang scored with 18 seconds left to get the win over No. 2 Montana State. He finished the game with eight points. Former AF varsity guy, Huck Patton had a hat trick. They also got wins over Top 15 teams in Utah State and North Dakota State. Montana State faces a big one this weekend against No. 2 St. Thomas in a National Championship rematch.
Utah State bursts into MCLA DII Top 10
After dropping one to Air Force, the Aggies followed it up with wins over then No. 10 San Marcos and No. 14 NDSU. USU had a lot of veterans that can score and could make a run this spring
